Dachshund is an animal of a short-legged and long-legged dog family member. The type of name comes from German which literally means "beaver dog," from (der) Dachs "beaver" and (der) Hund "dog". Its standard size was developed to sniff, pursue, and hunt the beaver and other animals living in the holes in the ground, while mini-sized ones are used for rabbit hunting. Due to its long body, this dog is sometimes called in the United States and elsewhere as hotdog dog or sausage dog, although those names are sometimes considered insulting. Although the name of this dog, dachshund, originated in Germany, in Germany itself is known—both official and unofficial—as Dackel or Teckel.
